New Law in Illinois Makes It Easier to Cancel MMO Sub

Illinois has passed a new law recently that requires all game sites to let subscribers cancel the game account online. It must be an exceptional and wonderful example to show us the miraculous power of inconvenienced consumer in canceling one's MMO subscription.

Alex Edwards, a subscriber of Final Fantasy XI for a few months wanted to cancel the account of the game which takes 13 dollars each month from his parents's credit card. But his parents Frank and Cinda couldn't figure out the way of cancelling the account by the website or even by the phone call.

But a dramatic thing is, Alex Edwards' father, Frank, just happens to be an Alderman in Springfield, Illinois who's a good friend of the local State Rep., Raymond Poe. Rep. Poe (R) introduced a bill, known as HB4178, which passed both the Illinois House and Senate in May, and was signed into law by Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) on Tuesday.

The new law is as below:

An Internet gaming service provider must give a consumer who is an Illinois resident the following: (1) a secure method at the Internet gaming service provider's web site that the consumer may use to cancel the service, which method shall not require the consumer to make a telephone call or send U.S. Postal Service mail to effectuate the cancellation; and (2) instructions that the consumer may follow to cancel the service at the Internet FFXI Gil gaming service provider's web site.

Though it seems to be a dramatic happening, but we really hope that the law will bring convenience to the users of MMOs and stimulate a more complete legal system regarding the MMOs.
